A Hummingbird moment

One unusually clear San Diego morning, the usual 'dragons breath' mist having found an early escape from our coast - I discovered a beautiful hummingbird who had made his way through the kitchen window. Perhaps he had managed to be lured by the colorful new shoots of the sweetpeas I had planted in my windowboxes - or as I prefer to imagine - he was lured by a powerful mystical instinct. An omen if you will.

Creating Inspirational and Sustainable environments - especially given the restraints of our current household improvement allowances- can sometimes seem like an overwhelming challenge. I mean, sometimes I think my former husband, would have much preferred that I were satisfied with a lazy Sunday afternoon spent painting our front porch, while he basked happily on the couch watching a Chargers game. In his never to be fulfilled perfect marital fantasies, I would be the domestic goddess of his dreams, flitting about in red lingerie, (every hair in place) hovering over him like that hummingbird, while serving up steaming bowls of chili and cornbread.

But alas, I am a woman with a mission bigger than myself, and in a world where we can get easily discouraged by the enormous amount of planetary work to be done - I'll take an omen and run with it anytime.
So, in honor of the beautiful, fragile hummingbird that has since found his escape out the kitchen window and back into the green folds of nature - I bestow you with these findings from none other than our Native American Indians. You know, the FIRST environmentalists, the ones that always had it together with our land, before greed overtook common sense:

THE HUMMINGBIRD
In many traditional cultures of the western world the hummingbird has powerful religious and spiritual significance. In the high Andes of South America, for example, the hummingbird is taken to be a symbol of resurrection. This is because each hummer becomes lifeless and seems to die on cold nights, but it comes back to life again when the miraculous sunrise brings warmth.

In MEDICINE CARDS: THE DISCOVERY OF POWER THROUGH THE WAYS OF ANIMALS, Jamie Sams and David Carson say that, for many people, the hummingbird is the creature that opens the heart.
When we assume hummingbird consciousness, our life becomes a wonderland of sensuous delights. We live for beauty, delighting in flowers, aromas, fine mist, and delicate tastes.

When it becomes our totem, the hummingbird teaches us to laugh and enjoy the creation, to appreciate the magic of being alive, and the truth of beauty.

Hummingbirds awaken us to the beauty of the present moment. As they dance the four quarters of embodied existence, they bring us medicine to solve the riddle of duality. They also awaken us to the medicinal properties of plants.

In ANIMAL SPEAK, Ted Andrews says hummingbirds teach us how to draw the life essence from flowers. "They can teach us how to use flowers to heal and win hearts in love."

Hummingbirds teach us fierce independence. They teach us to fight in a way where no one really gets hurt. They teach us simple courage. Andrews says the twittering, vibrating sounds of the hummingbirds bring us an internal massage that restores health and balance.

Hummingbirds also inspire us to protect the environment and to preserve old traditions that are in danger of being lost. When Native American ways were being destroyed by the expanding Euro-American culture, the Ghost-Shirt religion was established to try to bring back the animals and old ways through dancing. The leader of the dance was a hummingbird.

Certainly hummingbird magic is available to all who live in the New World. There is something inside the soul of all of us that wants to soar through sunbeams, then dance midair in a delicate mist, then take a simple bath on a leaf.

There is something in our souls that wants to hover at beautiful moments in our lives, making them freeze in time. There is something in us that wants to fly backwards and savor once more the beautiful past.

My final conclusion? Maybe we too should stop, look and listen for a while while humming serenely to natures calling. In that space, the joy for living is sure to become more prevalent than the fears of an unknown future. God uses hummingbirds to teach us how to maintain the pure
essense that makes up our true spirits - our forgotten zest for life.

GOT 5 MINUTES AND A FEW BUCKS? HERE'S A HEALTHY CORNUCOPIA FOR 3 SUSTAINABLE MEALS

The fullness of my life
The sweet wine of Autumn days - and Summer nights
My little hoard gleaned through the years
and hours rich with living

That will be my gift when death knocks at my door

Like most Americans, you are probably finding that you have less and less control over the skyrocketing cost of living these days. However, there is one area where we can enjoy the fruits of our earth, while saving some substantial $$$$'s in the process:
Preparing your own meals. I know - this is an outdated concept that requires Planning and even worse a Budget (the term itself conjures up all kinds of frightening images that go completely against that eighties-born grain that says we will always have enough) - but hey, just stay with me for a moment here.

Now, I have never claimed to be a gourmet cook - and don't even own an oven at the moment - which would simply appall Suzy Homemaker of the sixties. My 8 ft kitchen does however, come equipped with 3 energy saving devices which I can frankly say - are much more versatile and creative than slaving over any traditional stove:
a) A Burton induction cooktop:
Magnetically cooks your favorite sauteed dishes. Requires a cast iron or other oxidized cookware but can boil water within 30 seconds and works like a dream.

b) Rice Steamer
I have a Black and Decker model that turns off automatically and even steams your vegetables to boot.

3) Crock Pot -
For slow cooked meals like Chicken Soup that will fill your cozy little space with fragrant spices while you drink a great glass of red wine and indulge in your favorite reading material..

This week I went on a hunt to my local farmers market and with just a little forethought, came up with 3 meals for under $25.00. Don't ask me for measurements, I just guestimate in my cooking, and add herbs to taste...

PORTABELLA AND ASPARAGUS STIR FRY
Baby Bella portabellas 6 oz 1.49

brown rice - 99 cents a lb
romaine lettuce - 1.49
APPROXIMATELY 9.00 FOR ALL INGREDIENTS

Add asparagus - sear high until brown
add butter, a few tablespoons of red wine, and then mushrooms
add chopped spring onions
add red and yellow baby peppers
Top with sprigs of cilantro
squeeze with lemon
add soy sauce
Serve with steamed rice

Prep Time: Rice cooks itself. Sauteed vegetables: approximately 5 minutes

FRESH GARDEN SALAD WITH BROILED CHICKEN
One broiled chicken: 4.99
Romaine lettuce 1.69
one mango 49cents
cilantro from above
mini peppers from above
feta cheese 1.99
croutons 1.50
drews shitaake ginger dressing: 3.50

PREP TIME: Approximately 5 minutes to assemble all the above ingredients

MANGO CHICKEN SALAD
4 croissants: 2.00
Balance of Chicken breast from stir fry
Mix with mayo - dijonaise mustard - golden raisins (optional) cashews (optional)
leftover romaine lettuce

Prep Time: Approx 5 minutes to make 4 sandwiches

TOTAL COST FOR 3 MEALS: 25.00 for 2 to 4 servings of each

Approximately 2 bucks a person....

That 'B' word might not be so bad after all......

MAKING YOUR HOME MORE AFFORDABLE - THE GRASSROOTS WAY

So....I would love to see a show of hands on this whole mortgage fiasco. If you are not directly affected by the deepening mess that is currently plaguing our befuddled home lenders - then someone you know certainly is.

However, instead of twirling our thumbs waiting for our confused government to bail us out FIRST
this time - I say lets take control with the resources which happen to be quite literally in our own back yard:
There are hundreds of thousands of families in your own community who need an affordable housing solution and-with just a little imagination - you might just be the Hero of the day - while having fun creating rental space that might also bring you some much needed income.

First of all, review your home for potential enlargement capabilities. Do you have the ability to downsize into a corner of your home or garage while a larger family takes over the primary quarters of the home?

A detached garage has become a beautiful thing in these times. Just 300 square feet creates a perfect intimate setting, that with a little imagination, can offer a studio oasis with all the comforts of a larger home. Add an 8 ft. kitchen, small bath, washer and dryer, and office nook, along with high ceilings (which can make a huge difference in using vertical space to offset the limits of square footage) and you are good to go.

There is always an Up to every Downside - and the good news is that there are unbelievable deals to be had for building materials at the moment - expecially compared to those bubble years. And hey - don't forget Craigslist where you can even find Free items to help make your new space more livable. I recently even saw a Trailer that had so many strange additions that it quite frankly resembled a spaceship. But hey quit whining - it was a house - and it was free. They just wanted it out of there. And I can't say that I blame them.

Don't forget the exterior views, as window boxes, climbing rose trellesis, and a singing fountain surrounded by lush gardens are guaranteed to enfold you in the serene
beauty of natures glory. Who cares that the phone is ringing off the hook?

A good book, an above average glass of wine, and a comfy sleeping area....with the added advantages of a distant train whistle and San Diego ocean breezes rocking you to sleep.

Can you remember how to spell P-E-A-C-E O-F M-I-N-D?

HAPPY HOUR CRUISE: AZURE SEAS
What is better then watching the sun set on the Pacific Ocean? This two-hour cruise offers beautiful scenery, a magnificent sunset and complimentary hors d'oeuvres.
Plus, its just 40.00 which is a lot less work than flirting with all the boat owners who have already seen all the right moves and trust me on this -are not interested in taking you anywhere. AZURE SEAS Dock 1 at The Harbor in Oceanside

OCEANSIDE MUSEUM OF ART: If not in the mood to jump on the Coaster to visit any one of our magnificent San Diego cultural parks and museums like Balboa Park, check out the OCM on Pier Way in Oceanside.
If you are lucky enough to get in, JAZZ AT THE MUSEUM offers Cocktails, Appetizers, (compliments of 333) and music from artists like Dave Patrone for just 25.00 for Non Members. ART AFTER DARK is another all time favorite. 704 Pier View Way in Oceanside.

WINE TASTING - Our lovely Temecula Wine Country offers beautiful scenery and some great little vintages.
WILSON CREEK gets my votes for Best Wine Tasting…
LUNCH at THORNTON WINERY, which offers a sunlit view of the fruit trees, with a carafe of wine always served with hot baked bread. Note: Their summer jazz concerts are pricey but worth it.
SPEND THE NIGHT: At SOUTH COAST WINERY where you can get a wonderful little Villa and enjoy a Hot Air Balloon ride the next day. .

WHILE IN TEMECULA: Check out OLD TOWN for antiques. Okay, this is killing me to let you in on this one, cuz some of my best Interior Design finds have been found there so please lets just keep some of this info for ourselves or it won’t be a secret anymore. Here goes: Across the River from Front Street is GRANNYS ATTIC – complete with all the fun nooks and crannies that your own Grandmaw use to have in her own attic. One of a kind pieces that, with just a little imagination can help you create a whole room into something special. Don’t forget to check out the courtyard, where the cool vintage patio pieces are wearing genuine moss. Bring your SUV and trailer – and remember not to start a conversation with the cowboy slouching near the door. He isn’t real.

GLEN IVY HOT SPRINGS SPA - A little further north on the 15 from the Wine Country is this delightful day spa. For less than 50 bucks you get to spend the entire day relishing in a tropical wonderland of "Its All About Me" indulgement. Check out the underground caverns and discover a new layer of skin after scouring the mud off your sun-worn body in the famous mud baths. Get a massage for no other reason than to have one of their very handsome young boys lead you back to a secluded hut for a guilt-free rendezvous. Some say this spa and its healing waters were founded by The Mafia - I say it was founded by the gods of bliss.

CATALINA ISLAND - is unsurpassed in natural beauty, a true island oasis just off the coast of Southern California. Calm clear waters in a quaint Mediterranean like setting manages to be both relaxing and adventurous, which makes for the ideal romantic setting to fall in love – for a few days anyway. From the property, head North on the 5 about 20 minutes until you get to Dana Point - and pick up one of the cruise ships to the island. Venture out to the back country with a picnic lunch for a serious uphill hike, where in just under 3 miles, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of this magical aqua island and it’s studded sails.

Great whale watching can be had at the same time as your cruise, but be forewarned that the last boat out is typically filled with party animals who have had one too many margaritas, and the happiest one, (usually the heaviest one in the crowd) can somehow find a way to slip down the galley and onto your lap before you’re halfway back to Dana Point.

Stay at the AURORA HOTEL instead and ask for a third floor room. Then, go play kissy face on the roof top deck and witness one of the most amazing views on the planet.

FOUR SEASONS HOTEL - Just tilt your nose up a little and ACT like you belong there! (it helps to be blonde - and skinny) Also known for its World Class golf courses. O.K, so you may have to pay for THAT privilege.

BEST HIKE: BATIQUITOS LAGOON – while running away from the Four Seasons staff member who is totally on to you – head down the canyon toward the lagoon that runs behind the hotel. Or, for a more proper arrival - park at one of two designated parking lots on Batiquitos Drive in Carlsbad. This park loops around and offers majestic views of the lagoon, with the intoxicating scent of deciduous plants like lavender and sage.

LA COSTA RESORT is easily my personal favorite serenity spot. Purchase a massage and you get to play Queen for the day while enjoying all the amenities. The grounds are beautiful especially at night. Try the Blue Fire Grill for Happy Hour. lacostadotcom

BEST OUTLET ANYWHERE IN THE PLANET
THE CARLSBAD COMPANY STORES
Check out Bellefleur Restaurant for a great burger and extra crispy fries at lunch. Happy Hour Friday brings some pretty sensational martinis where a bartender named Girth will make you forget about that cute dress, which, in a weak moment reminiscent of the nineties: you put on hold at BCBG. Try to ignore the eternal 2010 voice that keeps coming back to haunt you with: “Is it a Need or a Want?”

BEST WAY TO TOOL AROUND TOWN:
The Coaster.....no traffic lights, comfy seats, and a view of the coast all the way to your destination for just a few bucks each way. You can leave your car and pick up at any village exit on the 5 for no charge. Great way to see a Charger game!

WHILE YOU'RE DOWNTOWN: The Gas Lamp Quarter is easily the hottest spot in San Diego for nightlife. You single people should check out The W Hotel for a great happy hour on the Roof Top Beach. Since there are too many great dining places to choose from, it’s best to graze your way down 4th, 5th, and 6th Street for appetizers, entrees, and desserts.

BEST JAZZ STATION: 98.1 (kifm) will give you continuous updates on San Diego's famous jazz concerts. Also, this summer you will find them sponsoring some great entertainment on Oceanside's own pier during JAZZ AT THE BEACH. Tough to find a better venue than our own Pacific Ocean as a backdrop.

BEST CONCERN VENUE: The Oceanside Ampitheater at The Pier.

FOR WEEKLY ENTERTAINMENT: The Belly Up in Solana Beach at the Design District.

BEST BREAKFAST:
BEACHBREAK CAFÉ in OCEANSIDE:
Go hungry and try a Jalapeno Scramble and the Banana Crunch French Toast. These guys have been servin’ it up fresh for us every morning for years, and they have got the breakfast thing DOWN – (even though the banks don’t seem to think so) So, hey, we’ll just continue boycotting Denny’s and all other Corporate Boxes until we see the Beach Break expansion approved. Thanks for your efforts Gary and Zel.
XXXX NEWS ALERTXXXX
LOOK FOR THE NEW BEACHBREAK NOW  OPEN AT CASSIDY AND COAST HWY. A SMALL BUSINESS OWNER BREAKTHROUGH!

THE NAKED CAFÉ:
Another great breakfast spot in Carlsbad and a new location in Encinitas. Love the Fairy Dust Chai Tea Latte. They also do a mean jalapeno scramble! Ask for Nathan and he’ll make sure you get the perfect viewing spot even through on the way to your table, you may be trippin’ over children and their doting Carlsbad parents who don’t mind paying 10 bucks for Oatmeal.

SWAMI'S ON STATE STREET
Sorry Naked Cafe - I have a new love.....breakfast traitor that I am.  Swami's has stolen my heart with it's organic smoothies, awesome oatmeal, fresh fruit and incredible omelette's.  Love the Healthy Burrito with chorizo sausage, avocado, black beans and egg whites.  Plus, they love my dog Luke, who knows his place tied up to the water faucet on the front patio.  Sometimes, if Luke is having a 'Good Day' he even gets a piece of bacon - extra crisp.

QUICK BITE: Buckaneer Beach Club is a few yards away from Seaview Villa, across from Buckaneer Beach where Old Surfer Dudes are cookin’ up excellent fresh Ahi sandwiches, Breakfast Burritos and Fish Tacos.
Some of the best pancakes anywhere since the Old Guys are also retired firemen who stand for hours gazing at the next wave with nary a surfboard in sight. Open by Chance but one worth taking.

HILL STREET COFFEE SHOP 524 Coast Hwy
Organic healthy fare and a great little courtyard setting in one of Oceanside’s finest historical Victorian homes. Dan brings in fresh fruit from his own orchard, and the fresh baked cornbread makes you feel like you’re having breakfast at grandma’s house.
In the same setting, your will find Sushi restaurant with non-japanese chefs who are sportin more than just a few interesting tattoos. But hey, no one turns out a better sushi roll, so just be patient and enjoy a roll so good, its got the L.A people cruising up just for the experience.

BEST DOO
Again in the same courtyard setting is a well-kept secret, HAIR STUDIO 514. Specializing in organic, environmentally friendly products, these people know how to brandish a pair of scissors like nobody’s business. They will have you sportin a new look that’s guaranteed to turn heads - and if you forgot lunch, someone will happily bring you an egg samwich from Hill Street.

BEST LATTE: THE PIERVIEW WAY COFFEE SHOP:
I like to cruise down the beach - jog down the pier and cross back over to this coffee shop for a egg and cheese sandwich on fresh ciabatta bread. Just remember that your eggs always come scrambled in Southern California. (They will look at you weird if you ask to have them fried)

BEST HANG OUT COFFEE SHOP:
PANNIKINS in Encinitas: Tucked away in a Charming Yellow Victorian House on the 101. Grab a paper to hide behind as you take notes on the best of the Southern Cal culture while surfers, exec, and Techies mingle with their overly well-behaved dogs.

BEST COFFEE SHOP FOOD and ENVIRONMENT
VINAKAS CAFÉ in Carlsbad. Tropical themed in a funky eclectic style that warrants no real explanation. Starbucks tried to run them out a few years ago, by planting a store in the same plaza at Carlsbad Blvd. and Carlsbad Village Dr, but it worked out perfect cuz the Biker Geezers migrated to Starbucks and Vinaka’s gets to just keep doing what they do best. Grab a table over the central fountain and enjoy one of the best tuna fish sandwiches or Lox and Bagel dishes you’ll find anywhere at an affordable price. Plus, it’s nice not to have to divert your eyes when a pair of overly snug biker shorts walk past you.

BEST NEW COFFEE SHOP:
THE CUP: My friends Karen and Dave will probably offer you a free cup of their secret blend of the world’s most exotic coffee, along with an aspirin for your hangover if you mention my name. Couches are brought out to the sidewalk for a view of the ocean while beach billionaires happily converse with cheerful deadbeats from the alleys who are poor but serene, cuz they knew what they were doing all the time and already have a place to lay their heads. (Squatters rights) Occasional guitars and singing bring a joyful spirit of denial, as you are transported far from the reality of a crazy economy.

VIGILUCCIS Anything that says Vigiluccis on the Coast is going to be good. Check out their newest restaurant: Astoria, located on Mission in Oceanside. Great wine list and close enough to walk from Casa By The Sea. vigiluccisdotcom

BAJA LOBSTER AT THE HARBOR
Buckets of fresh lobster and marinated chicken and carne asada. Plus a great Caesar and Salsa Bar. You can once again dream about being a boat owner and then just as quickly remember the price of gas and go back to humbly eating your taco.

DOMINICS AT THE HARBOR Hole in the Wall GREAT Italian Restaurant. Fabulous pizza with out of this world crust. Dominic might just crack open one of his better Chiantis if you ask really nicely.

BEST HAUNTS ON COAST HWY 101:
The Panikin Restaurant in Leucadia: A Pre-Starbucks Funky Coffee House. Try the curry chicken salad on one of their fresh baked bagels.

THE SELF REALIZATION CENTER In Cardiff - just walk through the ornate iron gate and take in the magic of these serene gardens overlooking the Pacific. No charge to discover who you REALLY are - but donations accepted.

THE CEDROS DESIGN DISTRICT
Just behind the historical train station off Lomas Santa Fe and Coast Hwy. Gotta try the Mac and Cheese at the Zinc Cafe. Wonderful boutique shops and completely unaffordable design centers.

BEST CONSIGNMENT STORE
The classy women of DOUBLE TAKE have been dressing me up for last minute affairs for years. Start with your basics of trousers, jeans, and couture - quality dress apparel downstairs, and then wind your way up to the Attic for accessories and sometimes the perfect Italian shoe. Fun beads, necklaces sunglasses will complete your look and have you out the door in minutes – but not without the final approval of your fellow shoppers. Be prepared to dance when encouraged to do so. Double Take’s got you covered with 3 locations in Encinitas, Solana Beach, and my personal fave – the rockin’ Roosevelt location in Carlsbad.

BEST WELL KEPT SECRET GOURMET RESTAURANT:
THE WINE SELLER AND BRASSERIE: Lori and Gary, The Purveyors of this exquisite gem are my dear friends and will welcome you with open arms into this classy restaurant that serves, ‘To-Die-For’ culinary creations along with a wine list that continually receives the prestigious Wine Spectator Grand Award. The Flourless Chocolate Grand Marnier Cake will leave you breathless. Saturday Wine Tasting for just $12.50.

BEST OCEANVIEW RESTAURANT
The Beach House in Cardiff on 101:
Dine upstairs cuz you may get splashed on the lower level when the surf comes crashing over the rocks.

BEST VIEW OF THE OCEANSIDE HARBOR
The Lighthouse Restaurant. Overlooks both Harbor and Sea for a delightful afternoon that works every time for making me feel like I'm on vacation - even though just a mile from home. Have a two buck blackened fish taco combined with a local cold brewski and you're Good to Go.

BEST GOURMET BAR FOOD:
The Flying Pig. As the story goes, the owners and chefs of this neighborhood gem always wanted to open their own restaurant, and were said to mention that day would happen "when Pigs fly". You got it - it appears Pigs do Fly and we have the benefit of a fabulous little pub close to home that's has already been noted as a Top 5 Restaurant to try in ALL of San Diego County. Try the Chicken and Dumplins.....slow roasted chicken with brown butter and sage sauce. To die for.

BEST MEXICAN FOOD
My choice is Las Olas in Carlsbad on Coast Hwy or across from The Beach House above. Try the Sour Cream Enchiladas with a fresh mango Margarita. Best Salsa too! WARNING: DO NOT DRINK MORE THAN 2 of the Infused Roasted Jalapeno and Pineapple Margaritas.

BEST MEXICAN PARTY PLACE
COYOTES - For good food and live bands- w/ cozy outdoor fire pits for great margarita conversations - Carlsbad Village

BEST FAST FOOD MEXICAN
We have more of these than other cities have McDonalds. I like Roberto’s on Oceanside Blvd and 101 and Juanita in Encinitas.
For the best bowl of Mexican Chicken Soup in the city, try La Especial Norte in Leucadia. Said by some to be the ONLY cure for the common cold.

BEST HAPPY HOUR
Calypso Café and its sister restaurant: Pappagallos for spicy south pacific fare and an excellent wine list. Located in Leucadia right before Encinitas. Blink and you might miss it.

BEST MARTINI AND OCEANSIDE RESTAURANT
333 CAFÉ AT THE PIER IN OCEANSIDE. Gotta love the gamble the Kohn guys took to bring a classy club and restaurant to the hauntingly beautiful – albeit lonely- Oceanside pier. It’s a smashing success with a fabulous martini happy hour, wonderful service, and unforgettable dinner experience.
Try one of their exotic vodkas Extra Dirty.

BEST DATE PLACE:
Vigiluccis on State Street in Downtown Carlsbad. Tranquil and romantic. Also private enough that you can play footsies or something a little more daring.

BEST PIZZA
Again, our local Restaurateur, located in Leucadia near Calypso Café. Gotta try the Four Cheese Pizza even if you are a Die-Hard Sauce person.

BEST SEAFOOD:
You can choose anyone of the expensive restaurants in town, but DINIS’ in Carlsbad brings in extraordinary cuts of fresh seafood at an affordable price. Join the Happy Hour crowd and you’ll get an amazing fresh fish taco – and sometimes an unwanted phone number-for just 2 bucks.

BEST BURGER
My fave? The Burger House on Mission in Oceanside - but then I am usually starving when passing this restaurant after a long beach walk so maybe I'm a bit biased. All I know for sure is that they have an Angus Beach Burger coupled with sweet potato fries that has me coming back for more at least once a week. Love the jalapeno burger for a sweetly seductive PMS moment.
A serene back courtyard that is nicely landscaped offers an added incentive for happily kicking back with friends. It's a military-friend place so be prepared to salute when feeling the pressure to do so.

BEST CHEESESTEAK
I’ve never been to Philly – the ole King of Cheesesteaks town, but I do know a good sandwich, and THE CHEESTEAK GRILL is consistent every time with the kind of lean steak, grilled mushroom, and melted white cheese that will make a girls heart sing – and her protein level soar back to normal. I dare you to find a better Cheesesteak sandwich in Southern California.
Oceanside Blvd next to the Starbucks.

BEST BEACH WALK
Buckaneer Beach South to Carlsbad Village. If you count about 10 houses down after the citadel you can find the steps that take you right to Ocean drive, and into the heart of the village.

SECOND BEST BEACH WALK
The Seawall in Carlsbad. Park at the West end of Carlsbad Village Drive. A bit busier but fun to people watch. NOTE: For tourists who don’t get it – the line to get into the parking lot is just that – which means don’t be an Ass and drive in front of us in search of a place to park. Instead, chill out with a fish taco and cold house brew at Harbor Fish Café.

BEST DRIVE UP THE COAST
Oceanside to San Clemente. Go to Del Mar Avenue for fabulous antique and boutique shops. Try the Blue Fire Grill for dinner. Check out the all day Farmers Market on Sundays. Have a Bloody Mary at the Fishermans Seafood Restaurant. Live a little and ask for The Spicy Bull.

BEST MONTH TO VISIT SAN DIEGO:
OCTOBER, NOVEMBER, DECEMBER: No crowds, beautiful sunsets, crisp mornings

BEST BOOKSTORE;
Barnes and Noble in Oceanside - across from Trader Joe's. Ask for a copy of the book: POPCORN POPPIN ON THE APRICOT TREE - By Faith Paulus(No relation)

FROM RAGS TO RICHES - A CINDERELLA HOUSE RESTORED

When Faith Paulus, Interior Designer and owner of Interiors By Faith happened upon a neglected cottage home in Oceanside, CA, near San Diego, she was immediately smitten.

“Stop the Car!” she exclaimed to her perplexed Realtor, Karen Rivoira, of The Jacques Company, who had somehow missed the For Sale sign, which had been posted almost as an afterthought on the mangled front lawn.

Karen seemed dubious as she took in the drab apricot colored Spanish Home, its natural light diminished by prison-like iron clad windows that did not appear to welcome the prospect of unsuspecting visitors. Faith picked up the closest cell phone and thrust it into the reluctant hands of her realtor friend. “It’s worth a call” she insisted. “If nothing else, I like the elevation.” The listing agent haltingly gave the usual information, before casually mentioning that the home was not officially listed on the MLS since it was in dire need of a cosmetic update before it could be shown to the general public.

“It’s a 1928 Spanish Home and has really only had a few owners over the years” said the agent. “Try to use your imagination.” she added with an apologetic tone, “and please ignore the smell. We plan to fumigate before we officially place the home on the market.”

Together the two friends warily climbed the porch; where glimpses of a sky blue Pacific coastline peeked out mischievously between mossy green pines -- one of which appeared to be the centuries-old home of a doddering falcon that swooped down to inspect the two trespassers. A stout old woman wearing a turquoise housedress which managed to perfectly match her turquoise house, also eyed the two girls precariously as she rubbed the mangled fur of a tired calico cat. “There are stories about that house….” she warned from the safe distance of her porch.

Peering into the musty old living room, Karen took one sniff of stale smoke and cat urine, and immediately decided to bow out; “I have allergies” the courageous realtor confessed, as she slinked out the front door. “I’ll just meet you back in the car”, she added with a feeble smile.

Faith, nodded absentmindedly--already captivated with the homes features. Drawing back the tobacco stained curtains, she marveled at the beautiful moldings of this 1928 Spanish Home, and with a slight tug of a tattered corner of the carpet, was delighted to find the original hardwood floors in pristine condition. The vintage doors were still intact, their crystal knobs gleaming as if in complete disregard to the passing of seventy-nine years.

The kitchen was another matter however. The cabinets had seen far too many coats of paint, and since the layout of a 1928 kitchen did not include the yet-to-be-invented refrigerator, an old Whirlpool sat stubbornly in the middle of the room. Worse, the water heater glared out rather haughtily from a prime corner space, as if it had always been content with being the kitchens focal point.

Faith was undaunted. A self proclaimed visionary who excels at any design challenge, she has an uncanny knack as her business motto suggests, for Finding the Soul of Your Home. I often proceed into a client’s home barefoot.” she confided. “In doing so, I can sometimes tune into the spirit of the space, which if you listen carefully, might offer its own subtle suggestions for personalizing the home with respect to its past and present owners.”

She consulted with her husband Bo, a creative, yet practical General Contractor who does not always share his wife’s mystical enthusiasm when it comes to real estate investments – and was pleased that he agreed on the potential of the cottage. Fortunately a large deduction was taken from the selling price, as the trustees were delighted to sell with no other responsibilities for repairs or improvements – other than the contingencies of a routine termite inspection.

The termite inspection however, soon resulted in anything but ‘routine’. Even though the prior owners had an annual maintenance certificate from a trusted termite company, the inspector’s pried plank after plank of rotted wood from a corner of the home, until the entire northeast wall of a bedroom was completely exposed. Karen, though a savvy business women - was somewhat green to the Real Estate Industry, and was not quite prepared for the relentless paperwork and communication that can prove to be a necessary evil in the business. Karen is quick to rehash the nightmares that were a product of her anxieties before the closing of the transaction. “Fleets of giant termites were stalking me in my dreams” she relents. “I somehow felt responsible for destroying this ancient colony that had been the rightful heirs to that property for almost eighty years.”

Finally, after making all necessary precautions and improvements to the composition without changing the footprint of this historical residence, they were ready to go forward with the much needed improvements. “Fortunately, the old tongue and groove redwood helped to preserve most of the original construction” says Bo. “Good bones are critical when it comes to extensive renovations of a home’s existing structure.”

After relocating the water heater to the linen closet, Bo raised the ceiling of the utility area in order to conjoin it with the rest of the kitchen’s ceiling height. He also used salvaged moldings to create a hexagon window into the dining room area, in order to draw in both space and light from the backyard. Faith, a professional color consultant, wove Dunn Edwards colors of lime green and sunny yellows to enhance the homes natural light, and applied chocolate brown as an accent within each of the newly created arches that were build by Bo for added dimension. Next, the homes entire operating system was given a fresh and efficient new overhaul, including updates on the lighting and electrical system, and a smooth Venetian drywall finish was applied to the walls.

The couple was delighted to find an original Doug Fir floor under five layers of vinyl in the kitchen. They chose a chestnut stain that blended nicely with the surrounding oak floors which had been carefully restored to their original luster. And Bo, a talented carpenter, found an old wood beam at Vintage Timberworks - a local salvager of historic wood - to create a beautiful mantelpiece which was perfectly stained to match.

The large bathroom was gutted out to allow room for a Jacuzzi tub, and sophisticated appliances that spoke of a bygone era were brought in to both kitchen and bath. “It was important to maintain the architectural integrity of the cottage, while at the same time introducing twentieth century updates for improved efficiency.” Faith noted. Details such as mosaic tile in the bathroom along with a bib sink and soaring cabinets in the kitchen helped to conserve the vintage look throughout the home.

Next, Faith tackled the garden area, which consisted solely of one old bougainvillea tree that later unveiled a lovely vine of ancient jasmine. Using a Spanish Fountain as a focal point, she brought in hand made iron gates from Mexico. Concrete was then poured and stamped to shape meandering paths which lead to a central courtyard. “The tranquil sounds of the fountain can now be heard through almost every room of the home” she muses. Together with her gardener, they combed the beautiful local nurseries of North San Diego County, as she selected each plant and fruit tree from the passenger seat of the truck, while the gardener tossed in her favorites. “This was kind of a haphazard method of planning a garden” Faith professes, “but after developing the footprint of a space, and applying the basic techniques of color, texture, and balance, I find that the best design results are achieved by being somewhat spontaneous. This method has always been successful in my approach to interiors, and though this was my first large landscape project, I discovered that the same intuitive approach was the key to personalizing the garden space of this cottage. Tapping into our creative side usually results in emptying the space of the left brain logic, in order to let both nature and harmony intercede.”

Now, complete with its elegant new look, this Spanish Home is known as “Casa By The Sea” and is used as both a vacation rental home for San Diego travelers, as well as an office for Faith, who consults and designs vacation rental properties. The exterior flaunts a fresh coat of marine grey paint coupled with whimsical coral window sashes which peek out from beneath charming black awnings and overflowing boxes of brilliant geraniums. The former rodent-infested garage is now a newly renovated ‘Casita’ which houses the Corporate Office for Back To The Tap, a green campaign that Faith has founded to minimize global plastic waste through a innovative filtered sports water bottle.

Citrus infused ocean breezes and wide tree lined streets of soaring pines and carefree palms surround this genteel neighborhood. The mailman still makes his daily deliveries on foot, and smiling golden retrievers stride gallantly alongside their mistress’s baby strollers, seemingly aloof to the new wave of changes that are currently taking place within this lovely seaside town. While some of the most coveted ocean view cottages are surrendering to the mighty cranes of the developer’s swift sword, other smaller investors like Bo and Faith Paulus are attempting to ‘beat the clock’ in order to preserve the historical homes of their community.

Faith hopes that she can continue to provide unique vacation rental homes for her growing list of appreciative vacation travelers – who are in search of a glimpse of an authentic Southern California experience. Although, even this die-hard visionary knows in her heart that she cannot compete with the insatiable developers who can only see the profits of the million dollar row homes that continue to strut across this coastal skyline like arrogant peacocks. “There is however, a certain satisfaction that comes from knowing that even the most brilliant pastel hues of these towering homes simply pale in comparison with the eternally breathtaking colors of a San Diego sunset” she admits.

A gleaming bronze plaque that was presented by the Historical Society of Oceanside now greets the guests of Casa By The Sea, with the words: The 1928 Lindsay Residence-- its entrenched message forever forming an honorable tribute to just one of the respectable Oceanside families that walked this changing neighborhood at one time in history. Mr. Lindsay in fact, once held the glorified title of Projectionist at a local downtown theater, which still offers small theatrical productions and showings to its audience.

“The city required a title search in order to issue the historical plaque, says Faith, “and in doing so we found that the Lindsay House was originally purchased for 10.00 in the Depression era of May, 1928. Now that’s a far cry from the 550,000.00 fixer price that I had convinced myself was a bargain in Southern California!”

Shortly after receiving this information, the couple was on one of their usual quests for unique antique pieces at a favorite consignment shop when a framed print of an old Vogue cover caught Faith’s eye. Imprinted in the lower left hand corner was the original date of the issue – May 1st, 1928. The lovely Fashion Model wearing a stylish twenties style cap and a lemon colored suit, now stands regally beside the sleek new refrigerator – which currently holds its own coveted space in the kitchen.

Recently, Casa by the Sea has been offered as a venue to a young couple who will be celebrating their wedding at the beach, just 6 blocks away. The bride is a professional photographer who decided to lease Casa by the Sea as the perfect backdrop for the wedding festivities – and she is enthusiastic about the images that will be captured within the colorful gardens and nostalgic rooms of this graciously restored cottage, while the wedding party prepares for her special day.

If you listen very carefully, you might just hear the Spirits of the House celebrate along with its guests that evening, as Casa by the Sea shows off her loveliest new finery to entertain among the blossoming foliage of an enchanting, yet ever-changing San Diego garden.

Behind The Scenes with Interiors By Faith

When I was twelve, I came home with a birdcage, which, as I earnestly explained to my baffled father, would not be used to house a bird. Rather, it would serve as a 'focal point' in my new bedroom.

My anticipated new boudoir had been generously inherited from my brother, who was intent on celebrating his own increasing independence, with a major move that would be accomplished in typical "seventies" style - down to the basement. So, bidding my sister and lifetime roommate Theresa adieu, I gave her permission to start sleeping on the bottom bunk, and in a sudden spirit of compassion, even threw in a couple of cute blazers - before getting on with the business of carving out my own identity.

Joe and I passed each other often in the narrow hallway of our home that summer of 1970, juggling articles that were not worthy of representing our suave new spaces. Joe's items were largely from the remains of a colorful family history - boxes of school progress reports, forgotten furniture pieces, and miscellaneous kitchen items that never did possess enough real meaning to warrant an actual space upstairs. On the other hand, I had the responsibility of peeling from the walls of my new room, aging yellowed tape which had once held my brothers fragmented adolescent imagination in the way of posters of swimsuit models, who glared across the room at forgotten images of previously idolized baseball heroes - with an air of an unknown power that I had yet to discover.

An eerie black light still swung precariously from the center of the ceiling, which when evening wore on, was capable of setting off dazzling white smiles from any of the other equally creative family members who stopped by to offer a suggestion or contribution for the benefit of a young designers budding talent.

I went straight to work - painting the walls a creamy white that would offer a nice backdrop to my funky orange spread, complete with an old indian poncho with real wooden beads, that would serve as a throw - donated by my sister Jean. A creamy white macrame lamps was delivered by my sister Lisa - the rewiring of which came courtesy of my Dad - and a macrame rug that had been knitted by my mother perfectly tied together the mustard gold and orange palate. A rocking chair that my grandmother donated really did not suit the look I was going for - but it became a lesson in keeping a few nostalgia items for adding character (and keeping the peace).

Joe's apparent weakness in what made truly great art was salvaged with freshly polished posters of David Cassidy and Bobby Sherman, who took on an infinite new importance as they graced my new walls - their come-hither smiles indicating that they too - were intent on discovering me as their 'one and only' within a growing sea of fans.

The birdcage was fitted with a philodendron that threatened to gather the dust of which that famous plant was known for as it curled gracefully over anything in its path - and a bubbling lava lamp kept tune nicely with my eight track stereo, which blurted out soulful tunes from the likes of Carol King and Cat Stevens.

It was unveiling day for Joe's bedroom and we all crept down into the dark moist basement - hesitant of what our only brother would have created in his quest for claiming his new thirteen-year old manhood. In all, we were pleasantly surprised that Joe had absorbed enough of the female energies of the home to acquire decent taste. An old striped mattress lay directly on the floor, a must for gaining the approval of our many friends that were a direct consequence of five teenagers all a year apart. Bean bag chairs of different shapes and colors were scattered about in an attempt to create an adequate social circle - and gauze cotton material was thrown across the tops of interesting floor lamps - creating just the right mysterious ambiance.

Album covers of Jethro Tull and The Allman Brothers served as his new artwork, (justifying that my brother might indeed have some semblance of perspective), and a large Japanese Lantern now covered the naked light bulb over the center of the room. Partitions of apple crates filled with additional albums and stamped with 'peace' symbols, acted as the new substitute walls - warning anyone who might be simply doing their laundry - not to enter his sacred space. And interesting beads from the popular new Pier 1 Imports were hung from the makeshift entrance - causing both friends and pets to get delightfully tangled when making their way into the room.

Over the years, Joe, myself and the rest of my sisters have continued to take great joy in creating our individual sacred spaces of Home and Garden, while contributing an ambiance that offers a comfortable atmosphere to those who are never considered strangers in our homes.

Whether age twelve or ninety-two, incorporating these same elements of Art, Furnishings, Lighting, Ambiance, Nostalgia, Hospitality, and staying current yet classic in design - along with staying true to yourself in the process - remains the same recipe for creating the type of home sanctuary that you can always call your own.

Update: Joe Peters continues to be an enigma for his heterosexual tendencies which also offer a confusing mix of surprisingly good taste in both fashion and design.

Behind The Scenes with Interiors By Faith - ASPEN

So, everyone thinks an Interior Designer's job is all Glamour - right?  Wrong!  Hey, if we could wave a magic wand and make the 'old' go away while bringing in the 'new' with one small 'poof'.....now that would be glamour - right???   But alas, in order to bring all the colors, senses, and imagination to your home, we must start with the drudge work.  You know - sorting and sifting, moving and arranging, (which by the way, is not in my job description - so you are way better off securing a 'free' friend who will help you with all this in advance), well before the ultimate vision of your dream home can begin to be established.

My current project in Aspen has been a perfect example of this process.  My client, who in this rare instance, also happens to be an acquaintance; (thus securing the "free friend" obligation for the sorting, sifting, moving, etc) found that as an entrepreneur, she had somehow allowed an office for each of her budding careers to invade three different areas of her home.  These mountains of paperwork, and to-do piles were gaining on her living space fast, becoming living, breathing monuments of arrogant step-mothers who were taking on whining personalities that threatened to topple if further ignored.

So, choosing to toss all glamour aside, we painstakingly created one beautiful office out of three, while my client took the afternoon to review each piece of paperwork - 90% of which was whisked out of the home within 6 rather large garbage bags.

Soon after, we began to visualize the Space Management order of things, and how it related to her very specific life style.  Which included, watching the beautiful Aspen mountains gather crystals of white falling snow while cruising on her stationary bike - bringing her desk into the kitchen to allow a watching eye on her frisky horses as they romp and play with a brilliant blue Aspen sky as their backdrop - and enjoying the Zen Den as we ordained it; a quiet corner of leather chairs, fountains, and fragrant candles - in order to savor a cup of tea at the end of her typically strenuous, yet fulfilling day as a professional healer of champion horses.

Now, we are able to focus on the real task at hand....the design of environmentally-friendly, artistic stone and tile finishes to complete her kitchens and baths in the manner that offers a comfortable, inspirational, and luxurious haven to  this hardworking horse woman and her deserving, equestrian friends.

Last week, I was able to achieve this goal with the selection of some of the most artistic looks that have been achieved to date as the tile and stone industry is busy introducing green-inspired surfaces like Paper Stone, compressed glass,  hand painted tiles, and even a hardwood floor that will be applied to the ceiling to mimic a mahogany look, (which in reality is a tile surface).  Custom barn doors in rustic grey, that will have their own raw steel sliding mechanism and kick plates to match, will serve as a privacy factor in order to support both kitchen and office duty.

My next trip in early November will be to oversee the design side of this project as our intricate installers go to work to create a combination of rustic/contemporary that is sure to show off the details of this already beautifully engineered home.

Who knows, I may even try my hand at skiing.....something I swore off 10 years ago when a mischievous friend??? coaxed me down an ominous black diamond mountain.   I still have the creaky shoulder to prove that the ride down was not - as promised - a piece of cake.

More to come as Behind The Scenes at Interiors By Faith continues....
